On many embedded systems the user space is primarily responsible to provide a dedicated HMI (Human-Machine-Interface), an administrative interface, and rarely a full-fledged user space as expected on a regular Linux desk-top system. The HMI in most cases is very application specific, but at the same time utilises typical user space interfaces (libs, device files, etc.). The administrative interface on the other hand will require tools to inspect system status that are Linux specific and fairly independent of the specific application.
